Robert Derby Holmes A Yankee in the Trenches (WWI Centenary Series)

""I have tried as an American in writing this book to give the public a complete view of the trenches and life on the Western Front as it appeared to me, and also my impression of conditions and men as I found them. It has been a pleasure to write it, and now that I have finished I am genuinely sorry that I cannot go further. On the lecture tour I find that people ask me questions, and I have tried in this book to give in detail many things about the quieter side of war that to an audience would seem too tame. I feel that the public want to know how the soldiers live when not in the trenches, for all the time out there is not spent in killing and carnage. As in the case of all men in the trenches, I heard things and stories that especially impressed me, so I have written them as hearsay, not taking to myself credit as their originator. I trust that the reader will find as much joy in the cockney character as I did and which I have tried to show the public; let me say now that no finer body of men than those Bermondsey boys of my battalion could be found."" R. Derby Holmes, Corporal of the 22d London Battalion of the Queen's Royal West Surrey Regiment This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

Dickens Charles A Child's History of England - The Original Classic Edition

This book is a delightful history of England. It is a book for all ages. As an adult I have enjoyed reading the book for pure pleasure. My two teenage daughters have used this book numerous times for school projects, especially for their history and compostion classes.
I never appreciated Charles Dickens as such a charming writer until I read this book, so after reading this, as an adult, I went back to his most familiar books and found that I still enjoyed this one best! It is written like he is an oral storyteller and is so engrossing as to make it difficult to put down.
I originally thought due to the title that I would just read it aloud to my girls but I found when they had fallen asleep I couldnt stop and have since read this book at least three times and bought a used copy for all my nieces and nephews.
His descriptions of the wars with the thousands of dead contrast sharply with the clean wars of today. Fields with thousands lying slaughtered is incomprehensible. Life was so cheap then at least as described by Dickens.
This is such an engrossing history but with so much strong opinion it certainly wouldnt pass muster in todays historical circles which is part of why it is so fun and dare I say naughty to read.
One of the most enjoyable books I have ever read!

Her debut collection, created with help and advice from Liz Berrry and others, doesn’t disappoint, as it takes its Insta-concerns (Scarlett has 10k+ followers) of depression, insecurity, mental ill-health and the deep and powerful ache of a love found, and turns them in to quite startling poetry -at times as light as petals, at others as heavy and violent as a hob nail boot. Black Friday was a nightmare for anyone who enjoyed playing online poker. In the midst of our great discouragement and dismay after the Department of Justice stripped us of our freedoms to play a game of skill with likeminded individuals, we need to gather our resources. This is not the time for emotional floundering. It is the time for effective plotting and scheming. I have worked through the aftermath of the most dismal period in the history of modern poker, and I believe that I have found a solid course of action. As a mental health professional, I have found myself in a unique position to not only garner the needed resilience to combat this monumental setback, but I have also discovered some conclusions that may help guide others through this current psychological mine field.

No one could have told me, and if they had, I would not have believed them, that I would be a writer, considering how difficult it was for me to read as a child. Despite this, circumstances had forced me to this profession, since having as much time as I had now, locked up for life, I wouldn't have much else to do. It is true that some prisoners were engaged in exercising in the yard, and besides studying in the library, the weakest of them took training courses, but all of them have something that I do not have, an ideal to fight for and move forward. With a sentence of a few months or even years, it is easy to think that the preparation will serve them well for something, and that it will be easier to make a living outside this prison, but in my case, with the certainty that I will never step outside again, what's the point of getting ready?

Stevenson Robert The Black Arrow - The Original Classic Edition

The Black Arrow is, without a doubt, one of my all time favorite books, just as Robert Louis Stevenson is one of my all time favorite authors. I find it hard to believe that The Black Arrow is probably the least well know of his great adventure novels (the others being, of course, Treasure Island and Kidnapped), as it is certainly the best as far as I am concerned.
As far as the story goes, it is one of the most entertaining plots that I have ever encountered. It is filled with more twists and turns than I would have thought possible, but remains very clear and fast paced. The characters are wonderful, as is the description and the writing itself. Granted, some of the language is a bit archaic, but I feel that this adds a lot to the authenticity of the story.
The Black Arrow is not a very easy read at first, but once you get into it it really flies by. It is as entertaining, exciting, and intriguing book as you will find, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Martin Sexton The Yeti Society

One of the persistent contemporary American myths is of a giant, hairy, human-like beast, or Bigfoot, predominantly haunting the Pacific Northwest rainforest. But it is not a modern myth – it is a very old one. Long before Europeans arrived, indigenous native tribes across the vast continent had as many as one hundred names for it: Sasquatch being one that survives today. This myth intersects with another, thousands of miles away in the remote Himalayas, equally as old: the Yeti.In more recent times, on the highest mountain range in the world, inexplicable tracks in the snow and ice have left modern mountaineers baffled. These giant footprints uncannily echo those found in North America. Despite modernity and the pushback of nature, all attempts to extinguish the myth of Bigfoot, Sasquatch, the Yeti have failed. It remains a powerful and resilient mystery.

Jenny Block O Wow - Discovering Your Ultimate Orgasm (Unabridged)

An ultimate orgasm is your personal best orgasm. It doesn't leave anything at the table. It doesn't want anything more. It lasts as long as it lasts. It takes as long as it takes. It's as messy and loud or quiet and tidy as you like. It has no room for shame or apology. An ultimate orgasm comes from questioning, exploring, experimenting, with no concern for how society or religion or anything else defines sex or female orgasm. The ultimate orgasm belongs to you and only you and it is your responsibility to find it, to have it, and to keep it for as long as you want to live a fully sexually satisfying life.

Bertha von Suttner Lay Down Your Arms: The Autobiography of Martha Von Tilling

When I was requested by the Committee of the International Arbitration and Peace Association, of which I have the honour to be a Member, to undertake the translation of the novel entitled Die Wafen Nieder, I considered it my duty to consent and I have found the labour truly a delight. Baroness Suttners striking tale has had so great a success on the Continent of Europe that it seems singular that no complete translation into English should yet have appeared. An incomplete version was published some time since in the United States, without the sanction of the authoress but it gives no just idea of the work. Apart from its value as a work of fiction-great as that is the book has a transcendent interest for the Society with which I am connected from its bearing on the question of war in generaland of the present state of Europe in particular. We English speaking people, whether in England, in the Colonies, or in the United States, being ourselves in no immediate danger of seeing our homes invaded, and our cities laid under contribution by hostile armies, are apt to forget how terribly the remembrance of such calamities, and the constant threat of their recurrence, haunt the lives of our Continental brethren.

Ruben Angelici Richard of Saint Victor, On the Trinity

Very few in the history of the church have not struggled with the dogma of the Trinity. Those who have not dismissed it as incomprehensible gibberish have found it a battlefield for division and misunderstanding. Even Christians, who adhere to the faith of the Creeds, have often found such dogma difficult to grasp. Richard of Saint Victor, a twelfth-century Scottish monk and Prior in the Abbey of Saint Victor, is emblematic in this struggle: «I have often read that there is . . . [only] one God . . . I have also read . . . that he is one and triune . . . But I do not remember having read anything on the evidences for these assertions.» Richard's theological response stems from a profoundly mystical life of prayer, which, in the Spirit, seeks to involve the mind, in continuation with the great Augustinian and Anselmian tradition. Ultimately, he presents a trinitarian model, intelligible to a Western context but which could also awake admiration from Greek theologians. Today Richard's dogmatics could represent a bridge for dialogue between different traditions. For the first time this theological masterpiece is being made available, unabridged, in English to allow a broader theological public to benefit from Richard's accomplishments. The translation offered here attempts to provide a clear and flowing text, while remaining as literally faithful as possible to the original Latin.

Peter C. Wilcox I Was Gone Long Before I Left

In St. Teresa of Avila's classic spiritual book Interior Castle she describes a difficult period of time in her spiritual journey when she said, «When I think of myself, I feel like a bird with a broken wing.» When I left the monastery thirty-eight years ago, this was exactly how I felt. I Was Gone Long Before I Left is the story about my interior struggle to leave the monastery after living this lifestyle for over twenty-five years. It explores the reasons why I went to the monastery, why I stayed, why I eventually left, and what I have learned. Maybe more importantly, it describes the many years of mental anguish, confusion, and depression that I went through to finally make this decision. It has brought back many painful memories and experiences and called for an honesty and vulnerability that I found daunting. For over thirty-eight years, I have been unable to write about my experience of life in the monastery because I felt ashamed. For years, I thought about leaving, but couldn't make this decision because I felt paralyzed psychologically and emotionally. Now, after all these years, I have found the courage to share my story.
