Brandy Purdy The Secrets of Lizzie Borden

In her enthralling, richly imagined new novel, Brandy Purdy, author of The Ripper’s Wife , creates a compelling portrait of the real, complex woman behind an unthinkable crime. Lizzie Borden should be one of the most fortunate young women in Fall River, Massachusetts. Her wealthy father could easily afford to provide his daughters with fashionable clothes, travel, and a rich, cultured life. Instead, haunted by the ghost of childhood poverty, he forces Lizzie and her sister, Emma, to live frugally, denying them the simplest modern conveniences. Suitors and socializing are discouraged, as her father views all gentleman callers as fortune hunters.Lonely and deeply unhappy, Lizzie stifles her frustration, dreaming of the freedom that will come with her eventual inheritance. But soon, even that chance of future independence seems about to be ripped away. And on a stifling August day in 1892, Lizzie’s long-simmering anger finally explodes…Vividly written and thought-provoking, The Secrets of Lizzie Borden explores the fascinating events behind a crime that continues to grip the public imagination—a story of how thwarted desires and desperate rage could turn a dutiful daughter into a notorious killer.

William Psy.D. Masterton Lizzie Didn't Do It!

On August 4, 1892, an elderly couple living in Fall River, Massachusetts, was slaughtered with a hatchet. Their daughter, Lizzie Borden, was first accused of the crime, then tried for it, and acquitted of it by a court of her peers. Yet, "conventional wisdom" and Fall River Society have always considered Lizzie guilty. "If Lizzie didn't swing the hatchet, who did?" they asked blamefully.
Now, after more than a century, the late University of Connecticut full Professor, William Masterton, uses modern forensic and extensive research to answer that question convincingly.

Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks;
When she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty one.

The rhythm and rhyme of the refrain may be defective; the conclusion according to Professor Masterton, that Lizzie Borden may have been the killer, is not!

E. Elaine Watson Lizzie Didn't Do It; Emma Did!

On a hot summer day in August of 1892, a double murder took place in Fall River, Massachusetts. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Borden were killed in their own home by a person or persons unknown who attacked them with an axe or hatchet-type implement. As of today, the case is still unsolved and open. Many millions of words have been written about the events of that day, and people still go to the home (now a Bed and Breakfast) on Second Street and think about the bloody crime that happened there so long ago.
This book will take you back to the crime scene and bring to light the name and face of the one who stood over those victims with a bloody hatchet in her hand—Emma Borden!
In folklore, however, it is Lizzie and not Emma that killed their father. Except for Prof. Masterton who maintained Lizzie's innocence in his book Lizzie Didn't Do It!, with Elaine Watson, Emma Borden now takes center stage. Did Emma do it?

In the wake of King Henry VIII's death, England's throne is left in a precarious state-as is the peculiar relationship between his two daughters. Anthony Trollope The Eustace Diamonds

The third and least political novel of the Palliser series, «The Eustace Diamonds» concerns the beautiful pathological liar Lizzie Greystock. Determined to marry into wealth, Lizzie snares the ailing Sir Florian Eustace and quickly becomes a widow. Despite the brevity of their marriage, Lizzie still inherits according to the generous terms of Sir Florian's will, which include the Eustace diamonds. When the Eustace family solicitor, Mr. Camperdown, begins to question her legal claim to the family heirloom, however, Lizzie begins to weave a tangled web of deception and crime to ensnare possession of the diamonds. Enlisting the aid of her cousin Frank Greystock, much to the dismay of his constant fiancée Lucy Morris, Lizzie seeks to both avoid legal persecution and have a true love affair, first with Frank, and later with Lord George de Bruce Carruthers. Considered a satire of the acceptance of the corrupting influence of money and greed in Victorian society, Trollope's novel blends elements of mystery, politics, and romance in a memorable and thought-provoking work.

When Carver recovers, and takes up a role at Boston's Asylum for the Insane, he will meet Borden again - broken, starving, overwhelmed by the madness that has shadowed him ever since he sailed on the Providence.Carver devotes himself to Borden's cure, sure it depends on drawing out the truth about that terrible voyage. So Carver must return once more to the edge of the sea and confront the man - and the myth - that lie in dark water.Elizabeth Lowry's gothic masterpiece, like Golden Hill and The Essex Serpent, gives the historical novel a new, beating heart. “… without a doubt the greatest poet English Canada has ever produced.” —Dennis Lee “A hundred years from now, one of the few Canadian poets whose work will still be read will be Al Purdy.” — Maclean’s Al Purdy (1918–2000), known as Canada’s unofficial poet laureate, wrote poetry that anyone could read. Having come from working-class roots with little in terms of formal education, he wrote in a colloquial style and with a rowdy yet sensitive poetic persona that has captured the hearts of many. Purdy was exceptional in the attention he paid to the geography and history of Canada; rather than using his Canada Council grant to write from Europe like many of his contemporaries, he took a trip to Canada’s Arctic where he wrote some of his most well-loved poems. His self-built A-frame in the Ontario township of Ameliasburgh also connected him to the land and history of that place, a literary legacy that lives on through the A-frame writer-in-residence program. Purdy wrote over three dozen collections of poems, two memoirs, a novel, a number of collections of his correspondence and anthologies. He was awarded the Governor General’s Literary Award for poetry twice, first in 1965 for The Cariboo Horses and then in 1986 for The Collected Poems of Al Purdy . He was an officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Order of Ontario. The League of Canadian Poets honoured him with the Voice of the Land Award, created specifically to recognize his tremendous contribution to Canadian poetry. This collection, created in honour of the poet’s upcoming 100th birthday on December 30, 2018, gathers voices old and new in celebration of the life and work of Al Purdy. Featuring poems by F.R. Scott, Earle Birney, Milton Acorn, Russell Thornton, David Zieroth, Lorna Crozier, Tom Wayman, Phil Hall, George Bowering, Peter Trower, Howard White, Cornelia Hoogland, Doug Beardsley, Patrick Lane, Susan Musgrave, Bruce Cockburn, Rodney DeCroo, Steven Heighton, James Arthur, Sadiqa de Meijer, Nicholas Bradley, Doug Paisley, Autumn Richardson and many more, Beyond Forgetting is guaranteed to move each and every Canadian poetry buff who grazes its pages.

Anthony Trollope The Eustace Diamonds

The Eustace Diamonds revolves around Lizzie Greystock, a fortune-hunter who ensnares the sickly, dissipated Sir Florian Eustace and is soon left a very wealthy widow and mother. While clever and beautiful, Lizzie has several character flaws; the greatest of these is an almost pathological delight in lying, even when it cannot benefit her. Before he dies, the disillusioned Sir Florian discovers all this, but does not think to change the generous terms of his will. The diamonds of the title are a necklace, a family heirloom that Sir Florian gave to Lizzie to wear. Though they belong to her husband's estate (and thus eventually will be the property of her son), Lizzie refuses to relinquish them. She lies about the terms under which they were given to her, leaving their ownership unclear. The indignant Eustace family lawyer, Mr. Camperdown, strives to retrieve the necklace, putting the Eustaces in an awkward position. On the one hand, the diamonds are valuable and Lizzie may not have a legal claim to them, but on the other, they do not want to antagonize the mother of the heir to the family estate.
